This is my 10th presidential election cycle as a voter, but I’ve been a political junkie since I was 7. Watching Watergate unfold and hearing President Richard M. Nixon’s resignation speech was a branding experience, and 51 years later, here I am.
I am sure there was probably a ton of infighting going on in both parties, but this cycle seems particularly fractious. Both parties have changed drastically since I first voted in 1984, and just like the Democrat Party is no longer the party of Harry Truman and JFK, the Republican Party of Reagan, Bush I, W. Bush, McCain, and Romney is long gone. But some people either refuse to realize this or don’t want to.
Many are hanging on to the old ways. The residual of “The Moral Majority,” the Republican elites, the racists/Lilly Whites, the corporatists, and the RINOs seem to be having the most difficulty coping.
